Top ten benefits of taking music exams

Updated: Dec 8, 2021

Anyone learning to play an instrument has the option to take exams to assess and record their progress. Taking exams is not a necessity when learning to play an instrument, but there are many important benefits, especially for younger students.

In no particular order, here are my top ten reasons to take instrumental exams:

1. Exams motivate students to work towards a tangible goal.

2. They give students a feeling of achievement that helps build their self-confidence.

3. They provide students and their parents with an indication of their progress.

4. Exams enable students to play for someone other than their friends and family. This is good preparation for performing for a bigger audience.

5. Exam syllabuses introduce students to a range of fantastic repertoire at all levels.

6. Exam syllabuses also cover crucial aspects of playing, such as scales, in a methodical way.

7. Music exams provide students with internationally recognised qualifications.

8. Passing an exam can inspire students to work harder to progress to the next grade.

9. Exams enable students to receive feedback from someone other than their teacher.

10. An exam is a fun challenge!
