5 reasons to take the Piano Prep Test

As a piano teacher with young students, I love ABRSM’s Piano Prep Test.

The Prep Test is an exam designed for young students who have been learning to play the piano for around 6-9 months. It includes a performance of two pieces (one which must be chosen from the Prep Test book and one of the candidate’s choice), a performance of three short ‘tunes’ from memory, and some ‘listening games’ (aural tests).

The exam provides a great bridge between beginning to play the piano and taking the Grade 1 exam. However, there are many more reasons for your students to take the Prep Test, and I have listed five of them below!

1. The content of the Prep Test includes a wide variety of musical elements, such as a range different notes, different types of articulation (including legato and staccato playing and accented notes), dynamics, and chords. Taking the test ensures that young students understand these fundamental musical concepts.

2. The exam is organised in a very similar way to the ABRSM graded exams, thereby giving students an idea of what the exams will be like, should they take them in the future.

3. No marks are awarded in the Prep Test – only written feedback. Therefore, the student cannot fail the exam, relieving some of the pressure that may usually be felt in an exam situation.

4. The Prep Test gives students the opportunity to perform to someone other than their teacher, friends or family. Likewise, it gives them an opportunity to receive feedback about their performance from someone other than their teacher.

5. The Prep Test gives young students a goal to work towards. Taking the exam brings them a sense of achievement and shows them that they are making progress.
